Alessandro Campoy and Matias Barraza Among Nation’s Top 100 Freshmen


MIAMI (December 28, 2017)
– FIU men’s soccer midfielders, Alessandro Campoy (Port au Prince, Haiti/Immaculate-LaSalle) and Matias Barraza (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy), have been recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com as two of the top 100 freshmen in the nation.

Campoy, who is ranked as the 56th-best freshman in the nation, finished 2017 tied for second on the team with 22 points scored (7g, 8a). He ended the season tops in Conference USA in assists and assists-per-game (0.47), tied for second in C-USA in points and points-per-game (1.29), tied for fourth in goals-per-game (0.41) and fifth in goals scored. Campoy also holds a share of 27th in the nation in total assists. The native of Haiti, Campoy has posted six multiple-point matches, including four-point outings against Ohio State (2g) on Aug. 27 and North Florida (1g, 2a) on Sept. 26.

Barraza, a local product who attended Doral Academy, totaled seven points on the year on three goals and an assist. His last goal of the season came during the 4-0 shutout over No. 24 New Mexico. Barraza is ranked as the 87th-best freshman in America by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

This season the Panthers posted a 12-2-4 record and a 6-0-2 mark in Conference USA, earning their first-ever C-USA regular season title. The Blue and Gold finished the regular season with an 11-0-4 record, the first time in school history that the Panthers recorded an undefeated regular season. FIU was also one of only two teams in Division I men’s soccer to accomplish the feat, joining Indiana.

The Panthers advanced to their 19th NCAA Championship, and their 11th at Division I, winning their first-round game against Omaha.
